Average woman 'spends £4k on handbags'

British women have gone handbag crazy, it seems, with the average girl spending around £4,000 on these fashion accessories during her lifetime, according to a new survey.



Handbags seem to have replaced shoes as the ultimate style must-have for any shopping trip, with women likely to have 17 bags in their wardrobes at any one time.

Though it might seem impossible to have quite so many different handbags, the average woman has five day bags, three evening bags, two work bags, two shopping bags, two sports bags, two travel bags and one beach bag, the poll for new fashion catalogue Montage revealed.

Yet despite already owning so many, two-thirds of women say they want to own more handbags, with one-fifth of them saying that they are the most important item in their wardrobe.

And according to designers, sales, and of course prices, of premium label handbags are soaring as women splash out on them.

Department store Selfridges has announced that the average price of a handbag at one of its outlets increased by 55 per cent in the space of a year to reach £850.
